John D’Emilio is one of the leading and best-known scholars in the area of GLBT studies. Many scholars consider him to be one of the founders of GLBT studies. In addition to being a scholar, he is a social activist who has dedicated a considerable amount of time to various activities helping both GLBT and mainstream social causes. D’Emilio is a professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago where his teaching centers on US history and gender studies.
