Jessie Johnson Young was widowed early and made the best of it, raising a young son (now a chemical engineer) by sewing for others and growing much of their own food. She says she chose to be happy and her poems and short stories, while not turning away from the unforgiving aspects of life, celebrate the moments that sustained her.
