Bryan’s political and religious leadership earned him the label, ‘the Great Commoner.’ He served in the US Congress, ran for the Presidency three times and was Secretary of State for President Woodrow Wilson. He acted as prosecutor in the Scopes Trial, during which he took the stand and withstood a blistering attack by defense attorney Clarence Darrow. Bryan won the case but died a week later.
